Leading Women Winemakers of Australian Wine Industry

Here is a peek into role played by some of the women winemakers of leading Australian wineries -

Sarah Crowe of Yarra Yering winery - Once praised by James Halliday for her contribution in producing quality wines at Yarra Yering. She was awarded ‘Winemaker of the year’ in James Halliday Wine Companion 2017 becoming the first women in the award history to do so.



Louisa Rose of Yalumba winery - She started working at Yalumba in 1993 and rose to become the chief winemaker in 2006. She had an important role in the development of The Virgilius Viognier, setting Australian Viognier on the world stage.

Prue Henschke of Henschke winery - Working for 30 years as the chief viticulturist, she is well known for her role at the winery across Australian wine industry. In the vines, her key responsibilities lie in general canopy management to soil moisture management and biodynamic viticulture. She had a significant role in gaining biodynamic certification for Henschke winery.

Sue Hodder of Wynns Coonawarra winery – Has been part of Wynns Coonawarra family for more than two decades, recently coming up with her 25th vintage. She has been instrumental in putting Coonawarra Cabernet on the world map. She terms the development of Black Label Cabernet as one of the peak points of her career working at the winery.

Virginia Wilcock of Vasse Felix winery – While making wines, she keeps the simple idea in the mind ‘to make wines she loves to drink’. From a very young age, she had a deep desire to grow fruit and to transform it into something more beautiful. Working as a chief winemaker of Vasse Felix winery, her years of hard work paid off, winning Gourmet Traveller Wine’s Australian Winemaker of the year award in 2012.
