Moscato wines are white wines produced from Muscat
Blanc grapes. These wines have a sweeter and lighter edge to them, and are thus
mostly served as dessert wines. But this doesn’t necessarily mean you can only
drink them with food. They taste marvellous even when had on their own, and do
not make you light - headed as they have very low alcohol content.
There are only 3 major styles of Moscato wines:
·
Sparkling
Moscatod’Asti: This Moscato wine style is sweet, bubbly and
fizzy. It is the most popular Moscato style and can be commonly found in Italy.
Produced from high - quality white Muscat Blanc grapes, these wines are famous
for their lively aromatics and low alcohol content (roughly 5 - 6% ABV). Some
widely popular wines of this style are NivoleMoscatod’Asti,
CastellodelPoggioMoscato etc.
·
Still
Moscato: This can be made with either Muscat Blanc or
Moscatel. Both the Zibbibo and the Muscat Blanc varieties can be used to
produce Still Moscatos, which are typically white in colour. This style is
lesser - known amongst the general public. Some of these wines can even be made
completely dry wherein the alcohol level rises to around 12% ABV. If you want
to try this style, go for a Bodegas BotaniMoscatel.
·
Dessert
Moscato: Dessert Moscatos can be seen in every nook and cranny
of the South of France, Australia, the US and Southern Spain. The Moscatel
grape variety (Muscat of Alexandria) is used for the production of this style
of wines. A slight variant could be the use of Orange Muscats to manufacture
this style. They have a dark and tawny colour along with a thick, oily and
complex texture in addition to juicy fruit flavours. The method of ‘oak aging’
is quite popular for improving these wines. When opting for Dessert Moscatos,
select a bottle of fine QuadyEssensia Orange Muscat or Donnafugata Ben Rye.
