Over the years, many of us have remained confused as
to which wine is sparkling wine and which is champagne. People are seen
debating over this dilemma at many parties and occasions, but most of them do
not have their facts right. This blog aims to solve this problem once and for
all.
The basic difference between the two is that champagne
is only that sparkling wine which has been produced in the Champagne region of
France. Thus, it has nothing to do with quality, but is a mark of geographical
area. It is arguable though, that Champagne produces some of the most
remarkable sparkling wines in the whole world.
The ComiteInterprofessional du vin de Champagne (CIVC)
is the official body of Champagne that regulates the production and
distribution of champagne around the world, and also lays down guidelines and
rules so that champagne remains the paramount sparkling wine. The set of rules
governing the process of viticulture include pruning, pressing and yielding of
grapes, and also recommends the best types of grapes and the most suitable
regions where these grapevines can be planted and cultivated.
The production of champagne involves a lengthy and
complex process known as the ‘MethodeChampenoise’, which imparts a distinct
taste to champagne. Many winemakers around the globe also make use of this
process by another name – ‘MethodeTraditionelle’, wherein the soil and climate
of the region are thought to play a big part in the taste of the sparkling wine
created. In the Champagne region, the climate is usually quite cool and the
soil is an unusual chalky type.
In Spain the sparkling wine produced using
MethodeTraditionelle goes by the name of Cava, Prosecco is the most renowned
dry sparkling of Italy while the sparklings produced in France outside the
Champagne region are known as Cremant. New Zealand, Australia and America
produce marvelloussparklings too.
All in all, having understood the difference, it
ultimately depends on your personal taste which sparkling you like best. In my
opinion, save Champagne for special occasions and open other sparklings when
you are in the mood to relax and enjoy at home.
