Interesting Wine Facts

Here are some lesser - known wine facts that are sure to keep the conversation going once you start on the topic of wines, making you seem like a knowledgeable person. So, when you go to a party or dinner with your friends next, try and break out these to have some of the heads turned around and eyes narrowed.

  • Wine is believed to have been discovered about 6000 years ago! It actually fermented accidentally when native yeasts stuck to grapes kept in containers and turned the sugars of the grapes into alcohol.
  • The world nurtures about 10,000 different varieties of wine grapes that can be used to produce a wide variety of distinct wines.
  • Instead of smelling the cork, you should examine it and make sure that it is in one piece. If the cork is mouldy or fragmented, it could mean there is some issue with the wine.
  •  The Japanese have built a special spa where people can go swim in tea, coffee and obviously, wine. Doesn’t this make you want to fly to Japan RIGHT NOW?
  • The secondary fermentation process for Prosecco (the part responsible for making the bubbles) takes place in a large tank instead of a bottle, which is not the case for Champagne and Cava. This way, winemakers can keep a check on the strength of the bubbles, resulting in two types of bubbly wines – Frizzante (slightly bubbly) and Spumante (full of fizz).
  • A number of times people are tempted to stock their wine in the kitchen or the fridge. Both are not at all good ideas as heat in the kitchen and chill in the fridge both are not good for wines. The best way to store wine is either look for a cool dark closet in the house to stock your bottles or better still would be to invest in wine cellars.
  •  Nicely packed and guarded, the oldest preserved wine bottle, believed to be about 1700 years old is on display in a museum in Germany.
  •  Shockingly, there are some people in this world who absolutely hate wines. Such people are called ‘oenophobics’.
